Voice Activation

One of the biggest design trends right now is smart home technology. And no, we’re not just talking about thermostats or porch cams. Think furniture with built-in charging stations or voice activated window treatments.

The evolution of smart window treatments has been fast – beginning with shades you could operate with a remote. Pretty cool at the time, but the developers at Hunter Douglas new window treatments could do more and launched the most advanced operating system on the market – PowerView® Motorization. With that came the ability to control shades from anywhere in the world with your smartphone or tablet. And then window treatments so intuitive, they moved throughout the day to a schedule you set.

So, what’s the latest wow feature? Voice activation. That’s right, if you have a smart speaker, you can simply say (after some programming of course), “HEY ALEXA, OPEN MY BLINDS” and ta-da, they open. PowerView® integrates with many devices. Check out the full list here.

Minimalism

With so many things competing for our attention, “outer order, inner calm” has quickly become THE mantra for the busy household. Visual clutter can be many things – a pile of unopened mail, too many knickknacks, or décor that is just way too fussy. Streamlined window treatments styles, like roller shades, have quickly become the window treatments of choice because of their clean, uncluttered appearance at the window.

Another way to get a more streamlined look is to choose a cordless lift system. Dangling operating cords catch the eye and detract from the overall beauty of the shade. They are also a pain to operate and pose a safety risk to young children and pets.

But if minimalism is just another word for boring in your vocabulary, don’t fear. With this streamlined aesthetic comes plenty of ways to add visual interest and still maintain a clean appearance. From fabric shades with subtle texturing to scraped wood blinds, you’ll achieve just the right amount of oomph to tip the scales from blah to beautiful.

Warm Tones

After decades of beige, French gray took the design community by storm, becoming THE on-trend color for the past several years. Everything from walls to window treatments were cooled down with this lovely neutral color.

But the pendulum has already started to swing the other way and brown (yes you read that right), is back on the scene in a big way. But before you start freaking out, let’s consider where this trend is coming from. All natural and sustainable are not just buzz words for food. They also can be applied to the manufacturing of home goods. Nature produces beautiful rich colors and going brown means embracing the lovely tones inherent in wood, grass or other natural fibers.

From woven woods to cellular shades in brown tones to hardwood shutters, brown window treatments bring a warmth and richness to the window, elevating your décor in a whole new way.

What trends are you excited to try?
